A beehive, or a honeycomb, is based on a 3-D hexagon called the rhombic dodecahedron (12 diamond faces). Just as hexagons can tile a plane, rhombic dodecahedra "tile" space, and this shape can be considered as the outer shell of a four dimensional cube -- honey bees live in 4D apartments! A pattern of what appears as hexagons emerge from these shapes when elongated and stacked.
